About

Well what the heck is a
jelly bucket?

It’s an archaic slang term for a lunch pail, formerly used by coal miners and other laborers residing in Appalachia.

You've found your personal jelly bucket; a great place to fuel your literary interests. Jelly Bucket is the place to for book reviews, author interviews and insightful stories all curated by our staff and MFA students of the Bluegrass Writers Studio.

Meet Issue #14 Staff

Editor-in-Chief: Bill McQueen

William (you can call him Bill) McQueen is a native of rural Indiana who now calls northern Kentucky home. An MFA student of Bluegrass Writer Studio, this is his fourth year as part of the Jelly Bucket team. He spends his free time reading, writing, enjoying a variety of outdoor activities, and—to the mild amusement of his wife and children—steadfastly cheering for his beloved Cincinnati Reds and Bengals. He probably should have said beloved before wife and children, instead.

Creative Nonfiction Editor: Tia Cannon

Tia Cannon is a recent graduate of Eastern Kentucky University having earned her bachelor's degree in English Rhetoric & Writing Professions. Currently, she works on campus as a graduate assistant in the Noel Studio while she completes the Bluegrass Writers Studio MFA program.

Fiction Editor: Tavian Wilson

This year’s fiction editor, Tavian Wilson, has his B.A. in Journalism from the University of Houston, and is currently a Creative Writing student in the Bluegrass Writers Studio M.F.A. program at Eastern Kentucky University. If Tavian could only take three things to a deserted island, he would take a massive box of Gushers, as much sweet tea as he could possibly hold, and maybe a flare, if he needs any help after he runs out of Gushers and sweet tea.

He loves road trips with his dog, Sir Cunningham Samuel L. Jackson (Hammy, for short). Together, they have driven to 26 U.S. states, and their goal is to drive to all fifty. They are hoping that an insanely unnecessary highway from San Diego to Hawaii opens up within the next couple of decades or so, for the sole purpose of allowing them to accomplish their dream.

When he was eight years old, he accidentally palmed a cactus like it was a basketball. This was pivotal for Tavian, and ever since then, he’s been a much more creative writer.

He wants to thank all of our readers, and everyone submitted! He, along with everyone, is looking forward to this year’s publication.

Poetry Editor: Robyn Groth

Robyn Groth is an Autistic poet and bookmaker with an MA in linguistics. She is the author of Hello, Robot (Defunkt Mag + Press), and her poetry is published or forthcoming in CALYX Journal, The Cortland Review, and Sugar House Review.

10-Minute Plays Editor: Bill McCann

Bill McCann is serving as 10-minute plays editor for a second issue of Jelly Bucket. He is an MFA student whose thesis is a memoir written in haibun. But before he was a graduate student at EKU he received an MA in Theatre from the UK by writing a play as his thesis. A member of the Dramatists Guild of America since 2012, McCann has had both stage and radio plays produced including his full-length play Boats Against the Current that was first produced by Flashback Theater, Somerset. KY. His monologue "Fiddlesticks and Dynamite," about Pikeville mayor Dr. William C. Hambley,  that was commissioned by the Spirits of Pikeville, Bicentennial Celebration will premiere in Pikeville, KY during 2024.
